TITLE: Release Notes for ComOS 3.0.3 and 3.0.4 DATE: August 25, 1994 Lucent Technologies Inc. makes every effort to provide
high-quality pm2_3.0.4 runs on the PM2 and PM2e. The PM11 is not supported. To upgrade to 3.0.4 you MUST use pminstall 3.0 or later, available from ftp.netcom.com:/pub/livingston/PLATFORM/PM2_RELEASE_3.0.4_ 3.0.4 is included in the release tar file or is available on ftp.netcom.com:/pub/livingston/upgrades/pm2_3.0.4. If you have any questions about the capabilities or features in ComOS 3.0.4, contact Lucent InterNetworking Systems Technical Support BEFORE upgrading your PortMaster. You can contact us at 800-458-9966 (1-510-426-0770 outside of the U.S.) or support@livingston.com. Upgrading The most important caveat about going from 2.4 to 3.0 is that you MUST use the 3.0 pminstall (or 3.0.1 when that comes out) and that once you upgrade, if you downgrade you'll lose your filters and location chat scripts. So we recommend using pmreadconf to snapshot your configuration, using pminstall 3.0 to upgrade, then using the 3.0 pmreadconf to snapshot your 3.0 configuration. Be sure and read-protect the configuration files that pmreadconf creates! To restore from that backup file, place the file pmreadconf created into the /usr/portmaster/pm_data directory and run pminstall, choose "Upgrade PortMaster", choose the file you created with pmreadconf. When the upgrade completes reboot the PortMaster and it'll use the new configuration. If you don't upgrade and then downgrade, your configuration will be fine. In Release 3.0, pm_readconf is included in a subdirectory of /usr/portmaster, and can be used to backup both 2.4 and 3.0 systems. Upgrading from one minor release to another is simpler, just make sure you're using the 3.0 pminstall when going from 3.0.1 to 3.0.4. ComOS enhancements 3.0.1 --> 3.0.3 Added pagination for User Table. Added pagination for Location Table. Enabled Proxy ARP support for other subnets of the same network. Ping attempts now come from the IP address nearest the target. This increases their chances of succeeding when partial routing tables exist. ComOS Bug Fixes 3.0.1 --> 3.0.3 Fixed occasional failure of Flash save operation which occurred when a FLASH compaction was required. ComOS enhancements 3.0.3 --> 3.0.4 Added NetBIOS over IPX support. This is enabled with "set netbios on". Added packet logging - IP rule set now allows "log" keyword on any rule line. This is logged to "auth.notice" on the designated syslog host. Added last packet cache for IP filter rules - This feature caches the packet header of the last packet which was filtered. The next packet is compared against the cached packet. If they match, the action taken on the previous packet is used. This improves performance on interfaces with long lists of rules. Added Access Control Filter Check on a telnet redirect. Added support for multiple DNS servers. The new command: "set nameserver 2 1.2.3.4" will set a second DNS or YP name server. Server rollover will automatically occur if the active server stops responding. Added support for an optional TCP port number to be specified at the "Host:" prompt. "set idletime" now resets on output as well as input, so users no longer get dropped off during long file downloads. The netdata service (for outbound use) now supports access via SPX/IPX in addition to TCP/IP. "set all security on" is now supported. The administrator can now repeat the last command in a telnet session by entering "!!" at the command prompt. Enhanced IPX RIP response - A dial-in user attempting to learn routing information is responded to on an earlier request. This decreases the time it takes for the VLM or NETX shell to connect to a server. Console error message for giant packets now includes packet size and sending host. ComOS Bug Fixes 3.0.3 --> 3.0.4 Fixed 8 bit Telnet transfer mode - 8 bit telnet transfer now works as it did in release 2.4. Fixed small memory leak in VJ compression - Was losing track of large headers in the receive packet cache. Improved Ethernet interface re-enable time - When network error (i.e. lost carrier) occurred it was taking 1-3 seconds for the ethernet interface to recover in some cases. This delay has been removed. Fixed pagination for SAP table viewing - When using "show sap" the "more" indication would display, pressing return brought the administrator back to the command prompt. This has been fixed. Improved memory management when adding rules to filters - When adding long rule sets to a filter large amounts of memory were consumed. The new algorithm is more efficient. Ignore Novell License packets on-demand interfaces - These packets were causing on-demand connections to never disconnect. These packets are no longer counted as port activity. Modem Control on port P0 - Changes to modem control on P0 are now disabled. It is always off. Can now telnet to ports other than 23 from the serial line Command> prompt. It used to be that if you switched name service from NIS to DNS and then back to NIS it wouldn't switch. This has been fixed. "set gateway 0.0.0.0" now removes static route entry for default gateway. Idle Timer Releases up through and including 3.0.3 only monitor input activity for the idletimer. Starting with release 3.0.4 it now monitors input AND output activity if the idletime is set from 2-240 minutes. The login, password and host prompts time out in 5 minutes. If you set the idletimer to 1 in Release 3.0 or later it times out the login, password and host prompts in 5 minutes but does not affect users once they've logged in. Note that setting the idletime to 1 for a location has the same effect as setting it to 0. Copyright and Trademarks© Copyright 1997 Lucent Technologies, Inc. All rights reserved.
